Neurofeedback Questions

How does the LENS work?

We apply sensors to the scalp to listen in on brainwave activity. We process the signal by computer, and extract information about certain key brainwave frequencies. Through a patented process, we then bring this information back to the client down the sensor wires to the person’s skin. The results are reduction and/or elimination of the symptoms, which previously interfered with the client’s quality of life. The sessions are brief (usually 3-5 minutes), gentle (usually the client feels nothing during the session), and the changes are lasting with some exceptions: with symptoms of progressive conditions such as Parkinson’s and MS, the treatment needs to be ongoing to sustain the improvement.

By reading an EEG, your brain’s faint electromagnetic impulses and for fractions of a second the EEG software mirrors back those impulses. This mirroring causes a fluctuation in your brainwaves, allowing dysfunctional patterns to correct themselves. Because the LENS process relies on the brain’s own wisdom to choose what needs healing, anything mediated by the Central Nervous System can be addressed, from physical head trauma to old psychological defenses to cravings and addictions, to memory and foggy thinking. Hundreds of thousands of people have been treated since Dr. Len Ochs invented the Low Energy Neurofeedback System in 1994. LENS integrates state-of-the-art research in neuropsychophysiology and behavioral biophysics into an empirically driven, individually customized treatment. The LENS feedback signal is far less strong than the field around a digital watch. In fifteen years of use, there has never been a case of someone being harmed by LENS.

How is Lens Different than traditional neurofeedback?

Conscious effort is not required on the part of the client. All that is necessary is to sit still for a few seconds, making LENS especially suitable for active children and people resistant to talk therapy. Lens requires less than half the number of sessions needed for active brain-wave training, making it much less expensive.

Does it work?

Most clients (over 85%) benefit greatly. They often notice improvements immediately–nearly always within the first four sessions. And the gains are permanent, with no further treatment needed.

Can there be side effects?

In over hundreds of thousands of clients, LENS treatment has never caused new disorders. The body may, however, show temporary symptoms of dealing with brain changes, such as feeling light-headed, wired, or fatigued. Brain reorganization means disruption of old compensating habits–an may be unsettling. Repressed symptoms like headaches or ticks can reoccur temporarily until a new homeostasis is established. Typically, these healing indicators soon vanish. Over a hundred research papers on the effectiveness of neurofeedback and LENS have been published. The National Institute of Health sponsored a study of LENS for the treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury, and the government of the Netherlands conducted a large double-blind study of successful treatment of adult ADHD with LENS. Both studies are scheduled to be published in 2012. LENS is particularly effective with children. LENS is research-based science, not a religion, so belief is not a requirement. Your positive qualities are anchored in resilient brain-waves. Only stuck, frozen patterns are affected by LENS.

Do I need to stop my medications?

It is not necessary to be off medications, drugs, or alcohol before LENS treatment. Please communicate with your prescribing physician about your ever-changing needs for medication. May people feel less interested in recreational drugs and alcohol after treatment with LENS.
Clients often say they feel clearer and more present after LENS treatment. But you are always inside yourself, so functioning better may seem ordinary and familiar, because you have experienced this kind of peak performance before in your best times. Parents, teachers, spouses or friends are often more surprised by a LENS participant’s improved moods and functionality than they are themselves. So it’s a good idea to note some measurements before treatment. Ask yourself quantifiable questions: how long am I able to concentrate before being distracted, how often do lose my temper, how many hours a day am I usually awake and energized? How often do I crave my addictions? How many times a week do I wake up at 3:30am? How will I know if I my functioning in the world changed?
